Rolling a 1 or a 20 is a critical failure or critical hit in D&D. She didn't really have any rules for landing either of those, but she did get a 20 for her eyebrows, so she decided to do rainbows for them! For her eyeshadow itself, she used a palette that had 12 pans, so she rolled a D12 die to determine which shadows to use, but she didn't really have any rules for placement, as she made it up herself on the fly in the video. I wanted to add some rules for that!
I do like the idea of rolling like above for each makeup category beyond your basic face makeup - so do your face primer, eye primer, foundation, and concealer first.
We are going to roll a D20 (or use a random number generator online) for our eyeshadow* (see extra rolls below), eye liner, eyebrows, blush, contouring, highlighter, eyelashes, and lips. Of course, omit any of those products if you don't wear them. I would say that if you roll a 1 that means you don't use that product at all.
I found this eyeshadow "map" online, and thought it would be a great base for determining how many eyeshadows one uses, and where one places them.
Rolled 1-10: choose a neutral eyeshadow palette, may include "pops" of colorRolled 11-15: choose a mix of neutral and colorful eyeshadow paletteRolled 16-20: choose any palette you want, but it has to include a lot of color
1 - all over lid and crease shade2 - all over lid shade, all over crease shade3 - lid shade, crease shade, inner corner4 - crease, inner lid, outer lid, inner corner5 - crease, outer lid, middle lid, inner lid, inner corner6 - inner crease, outer crease, outer lid, inner lid, brow bone, inner corner7 - crease, above crease, outer lid, middle lid, inner lid, brow bone, inner corner8 - deep crease, crease, above crease, outer lid, middle lid, inner lid, brow bone, inner corner
Now that you know how many colors you'll use, take your chosen palette (which should have at least 8 colors in it to choose from) and roll for each eyeshadow you'll use.
For example, my below eye look was made using a roll of 3. I got the red color for my lid shade, the yellow for my crease shade...And a TEAL shade for my inner corner! It oddly enough looked pretty cool!
- Inspiration: roll or generate a number between 1 and however many shimmers are in your palette. Count starting from the top left which shimmer and you can use that in your eyeshadow look.
- Advantage: re-roll ONE SINGLE roll you wish turned out differently. Use the larger number of the two.
